Muslin vs. Cotton: What's the Real Difference for Your Baby?

Walk into any baby store and you’ll see the word “muslin” everywhere — on swaddles, on wraps, on washcloths. But what actually makes muslin different from the regular cotton in your baby’s other clothes? Here’s the honest answer.

It’s still 100% cotton — the construction is what changes

Muslin isn’t a different fibre from cotton at all — it’s the same natural cotton, just constructed differently. Regular cotton fabric (like what’s used in most onesies) is a single layer, tightly woven for structure. Muslin, especially the kind used in swaddles and wraps, is typically woven as a fine, open-weave fabric and then layered — most quality muslin today, including ours, is a double-layer (double gauze) cotton — two loosely woven layers, still 100% cotton, lightly stitched or woven together. That double-layer construction is what actually gives muslin its breathability and softness, more than the weave alone.

1. It breathes more

The open, double-layer construction lets air move through the fabric far more freely than a single tightly-woven layer of cotton. In a hot, humid Indian summer, this is the difference between a baby who overheats inside a swaddle and one who stays comfortable.

2. It softens faster

The looser double-layer construction means the fibres relax and soften with every single wash — noticeably faster than standard single-layer cotton. Most parents tell us their muslin gets genuinely cloud-soft within the first few washes, while it can take regular cotton far longer to lose its initial stiffness.

3. It’s lighter, but still durable

Don’t mistake “lightweight” for “flimsy.” Good double-layer muslin holds up to years of washing and use — it’s just light enough not to overheat a newborn while still being sturdy enough to last through toddlerhood as a comfort blanket.

So which should you choose?

For anything that sits directly against your baby’s skin for extended periods — swaddles, wraps, comforters — muslin’s breathability and gentleness usually win. For structured clothing that needs more shape, like a jabla or romper, a single-layer, slightly tighter weave of cotton makes more practical sense.

Whichever you choose, look for one thing above all: certification. Every Hug Swaddle product, muslin or otherwise, is 100% cotton and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified — tested safe against your baby’s skin, regardless of the construction.
